It’s not often that a manufacturer reveals a concept car that makes you want one. The Renault 4 JP4x4 Concept, I think, is one such car. You probably remember reading about the Renault 4 Savane 4×4 Concept a year ago. Well, the JP4x4 Concept we are seeing here, is essentially a “beach adventurer” version of it.
Jean-Philippe Salar, Design Director at Renault, describes the JP4x4 Concept as a cross between a pick-up and a beach buggy, and I think that’s what makes it look pretty cool. While the vehicle is mostly open, the roof has an X bracing that serves a dual purpose: stiffness and a surfboard holder.
From a technical standpoint, the JP4x4 Concept is built on the same platform as the Savane 4×4 Concept, as mentioned earlier. Ground clearance is therefore 15 mm higher than on the standard Renault 4 E-Tech electric, while the front and rear tracks are 10 mm wider. Those 18-inch wheels look very interesting indeed, and they’re wrapped with special Goodyear UltraGrip Performance+ 225/55 tyres. BTW, the pattern you see on the side cladding is achieved via 3D printing.
Inside, things get very, very orange, and the reason for that apparently is to enhance bright, lively and cheerful feelings. The orange interior offers a vibrant contrast against the exterior’s Emerald Green paintwork. And apparently, those bucket seats are inspired by Egyptian mummies. They feature mixed-fabric upholstery with a crepe base and diagonal mesh sections. The door panels, boot surround and dashboard also feature a textile finish, while the dashboard includes a grab handle on the passenger side should the terrain get bumpy.
We don’t have horsepower and torque figures of the JP4x4 Concept, but all we need to know right now is that the concept has a dual-motor AWD powertrain. Which means, there’s a second electric motor on the rear axle for permanent all-wheel-drive capability.
