Mercedes-Benz EQC 4×4² flexes its off-roading capabilities

The folks at Mercedes-Benz seem to have realized that the EQC‘s ground clearance is not enough for crappy Indian roads, or maybe, they just thought of having some fun building an EV rock crawler, similar to the likes of the E 400 All-Terrain 4×4². Either way, the EQC 4×4² looks pretty cool with its 293 mm ground clearance which is more than twice as high as that of the production EQC.

If that’s not impressive enough, it boasts approach, departure and breakover angles of 31.8-, 33.0- and 24.2-degrees, respectively. Also, its fording depth has gone up by 15 cm compared to the standard EQC; from 250 mm to 400 mm. Interestingly, the 4×4² suspension is attached to the same body mounting points as the standard suspension. The portal axles are fitted with 20-inch wheels shod with 285/50 off-road tyres.

No power upgrades for the EQC 4×4², not that it requires any. The standard EQC already boasts 408 hp (300 kW) and 765 Nm (564 lb-ft) of torque, with juice supplied by an 80 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. However, this rock crawler might not offer the same official 450+ km (280+ mi) WLTP range as the standard one.

While the production EQC already has an external noise generator (Acoustic Vehicle Alert System, AVAS) required by law, the EQC 4×4² has got a more powerful AVAS. Apparently, the speakers are housed within the headlight housing to create what Mercedes calls as “lampspeaker”.
