Dealers: Buy 4 Luces for that limited edition allocation 😉
The last time there was this much controversy was during the reveal of that dreaded Jaguar rebranding. Except for a few top JLR employees (pun not intended) and the PR team, no one was a fan of the rebranding and the Type 00 concept. If you think about it, one might wonder if Ferrari intentionally stirred up this controversy. But if you think again, you’ll realize that Ferrari doesn’t sell new cars to just anybody. Well then, why did they do this?
I’m not 100% sure why that is, but if you remember, Ferrari revealed the Luce interior earlier this year. It was designed by LoveFrom, a creative agency led by ex-Apple designer Sir Jony Ive and industrial designer Marc Newson. Pretty much everyone loved the interior design, as it made a great effort in merging both analog and digital worlds. As it turns out, the exterior too was designed by those two blokes. The weirdest thing, I think, is that the Luce looks as if the exterior was designed by people who never spoke to the ones who did the interior, because the interior looks so good. The connection appears to be missing.
When there was so much effort in designing the interior, you’d expect the same retro-modern looking exterior that reminds you of a few classic Ferraris. But instead, what you get is a mashup of a Honda, a Toyota and maybe a bunch of Chinese EVs. This is the most non-Ferrari-looking Ferrari ever. Sure, there were a few oddball Ferraris in the distant past, and the Luce will certainly join that list. But anyway, let’s talk about the aerodynamics a little. That U-shaped thing you see on the front acts like a giant fixed wing. The actual headlights sit flush on that black panel. The bumper houses active shutters.

The Luce is quite a large vehicle, measuring 5,026 mm long, 1,999 mm wide (excluding mirrors) and 1,544 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,961 mm. The car rides on a staggered wheel setup of 23-inches at the front and 24-inches at the rear. An active suspension system derived from the F80 and rear-axle steering are some of the other key highlights. Ferrari claims that the Luce project has fetched more than 60 new patents, but as we know, the hot topic at the moment is the Luce’s looks, or the lack of it.Â
The Luce’s chassis was revealed last October; the project was then named ‘Elettrica‘. In case you missed it, the Luce is powered by four electric motors (permanent magnet), one for each wheel. Apparently, these motors are derivatives of the ones you’ll find in the F80. Combined, these motors will offer a max power output of up to 772 kW (1,050 metric hp) in Launch Control mode. Max torque is 990 Nm (730 lb-ft), again, with Launch Control active.
At wheels, the max torque is 11,500 Nm (8,482 lb-ft). The official 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time is 2.5 seconds, while the top speed is 310 km/h (193 mph). With optional equipment, kerb weight is claimed to be 2,260 kg (4,982 lbs), which doesn’t sound too shabby for a large EV. Weight distribution is claimed to be 47/53.
The battery pack is made of 15 modules, with each containing 14 cells. Which means there are 210 cells in total, with a gross capacity of 122 kWh. WLTP range is estimated to be 530 km (329 mi). Speaking of range, the wheel-hub bearing itself, for example, is claimed to increase the overall range by approximately 9 km (5.6 mi), thanks to low-friction seals that reduce rolling resistance by 50%.
We already read about the interior earlier this year, as mentioned, but this time, we’re seeing a little bit more, including the rear seating. The OLED displays are supplied by Samsung. As for the audio experience, Ferrari has installed a 21-speaker, 3000-watt audio system in the Luce.
What about the pricing? Well, according to reports, the Luce starts at around €550,000 in Italy, or about $640,000. Now all that’s left is to see how the Ferrari VIPs will defend this.
