Following the debut of the Luce, Ferrari’s share price dropped by nearly 8%. That’s how much everyone hated the design. One of Ferrari collectors, Shmee150, who never speaks negatively against the brand, called it “a cartoon” in his latest video. Former chairman Luca di Montezemolo expressed his concern that the new model risks damaging the brand’s legacy. The point is, literally no one (from the automotive community) has a positive opinion on this strange contraption. And if you look at the car a few more times, you’ll notice why that is: It’s all about the proportions. If you don’t understand or get the proportions right, you’ll end up with a potato, as was the case with the Luce.
Instagram car design influencer sugardesign_1 has shown how the Luce actually should’ve looked. He has done a fantastic job in getting the proportions right while retaining all the styling elements. He appears to have extended the nose a li’l bit, reduced the waistline, and lowered the roofline as well. Now, one might argue that these proportions won’t work for the Luce since it’s an EV and the battery is on the floor, which causes a raised waistline. But other manufacturers have got the proportions right with a floor-mounted battery pack. Take the Taycan, for example, or the Xiaomi SU7. So, there’s no excuse for not getting the proportions right. If the battery pack doesn’t allow for getting the proportions right, then redesign the battery pack. We’re talkin about a €550,000 fkin Ferrari here. The only reason you mess it up is when you don’t understand the proportions because you’ve never designed a car before.
Some people have this theory that the Luce is just a fleet average CO2 compliance car, and its target audience is tech bros and not the regular car guys. And the reason they say that is because during the media launch, tech content creators were given the top priority rather than automotive content creators. But when you consider how much Ferrari cares about its image, so much so that it won’t hesitate to even send legal notices to its customers for modifying their cars, I don’t think the argument that the Luce looks the way it looks because it is just a fleet average CO2 compliance car or it has a different target audience, holds true. I think that Ferrari genuinely messed up this time.
