Yes, you read that right. Volkswagen has brought the Polo GTI to India. The company chose to launch the much-awaited Polo GTI today in a rather unusual way, in association with Autocar India, somewhere in the middle of nowhere, at Rs 25.65 lakhs, ex-showroom, Thane.
Unlike the regular Polo and GT twins, this one is coming to India via the CBU route, and hence that eye-watering price. Initially, there’ll be only 99 units for the interested Indians to purchase. As you can see in the picture, the GTI for India is a three-door variant. LED headlamp clusters + DRL with red accent that flows into the grille, a sporty bumper, and GTI badging on the grille will help differentiate the performance version from the other two. Similar story on the rear-end as well, with a sporty bumper and exhaust tip. The GTI rides on 16-inch twin 5-spoke “Salvador” grey metallic wheels.
On the inside, the main difference is the GTI flat-bottom steering wheel with red contrast stitching. Notice the sporty aluminium pedals too. The Polo GTI packs a 1.8-litre 4-cylinder TSI petrol engine producing 189 bhp @ 5,300 rpm and 250 Nm of torque @ 1,250 rpm, and comes mated with a 7-speed DSG transmission. 0-100 km/h is rated at 6.7 seconds. Top speed is limited to 235 km/h. There’s a limited slip differential up front and stiffer suspension. Speaking to Autocar, Michael Mayer, head of VW India, said the suspension has been tuned for Indian conditions.
Equipment list includes dual front and curtain airbags (6 total), ABS+EBD, ESC, ASR (Traction Control), Automatic Climate Control, cruise control, hill start assist, touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth telephony and navigation, and 6 speakers.
The GTI measures 3,976 mm in length, 1,682 mm in width and 1,452 mm in height. Wheelbase measures 2,468 mm. Fuel efficiency is claimed at 16.34 kmpl.
