The 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake has now got a performance sibling in CLA 45 4Matic+ guise, available in both standard and S variants.

Typical of an AMG variant these days, the CLA 45 gets AMG-specific radiator grille with vertical slats and a more aggressive bumper design with large air intakes and canards. The rear end is characterized by two round twin tailpipes (82 mm diameter); the S-models are distinguished by their larger, 90 mm exhaust tailpipes. There’s also a diffuser with four vertical fins for enhanced aerodynamic performance. This particular example rides on 19-inch wheels shod with 255/35 rubber.

The interiors are familiar too, with features including MBUX infotainment system with 3 AMG display styles – Classic, Sport and Supersport. As standard, the S-models are equipped with the AMG Performance steering wheel in Nappa leather/Dinamica microfibre, and AMG steering wheel buttons. Options include AMG Ride Control adaptive damping system, AMG Real Performance Sound, and AMG Dynamic Plus package for the base model.

As for braking, the base model gets 4-piston monobloc fixed front calipers on 350 x 34 mm discs, while at the rear axle, 1-piston floating calipers act on 330 x 22 mm discs. The S-model and the base model with the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package are decelerated by an even larger braking system equipped with 6-piston fixed calipers and 360 x 36 mm discs at the front; the calipers are painted red and bear a black AMG logo.

The driver gets 6 AMG Dynamic Select drive programs – Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual and RACE (standard for S-Model, included in the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package for the base model). These drive programs have sub modes too which extend ESP functions and steering characteristics.

Powering the new CLA 45 4Matic+ Shooting Brake is the new 2.0 4-cylinder engine that we read about last month. In the standard tune, the engine offers 285 kW (387 hp) at 6500 rpm and 480 Nm of torque at 4750 – 5000 rpm. In the S-models, the tune is 310 kW (421 hp) at 6750 rpm and 500 Nm of torque at 5000 – 5250 rpm.

An 8G dual-clutch automatic transmission sends power to the all four wheels via 4Matic+ fully variable AWD system with AMG Torque Control. The S-model sprints from 0 – 100 km/h in 4.0 seconds while the base model takes 0.1 seconds more; top speed is limited to 270 km/h in the former and 250 in the latter, which can also be taken to 270 km/h with AMG Driver‘s Package.

The standard Race-Start function allows maximum acceleration from stationary. The S-model also gets Drift mode as standard; included in the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package for the base model.

The Shooting Brake gets a newly developed rear axle differential, which for the first time incorporates two multi-plate clutches. These according to Mercedes, open and close at lightning speed to control the torque flow for each rear wheel individually.
