I know, some people might find it rather uncomfortable seeing the words BMW and pickup together, but why not? Mercedes has the X-Class. Unlike the X-Class, the X7 Pickup isn’t built by Nissan. It’s the creation of the trainees at BMW Munich plant, for this year’s BMW Motorrad Days.

Which is why you also see an F 850 GS on the bed. The Pickup is based on the new X7 xDrive40i featuring two-level air suspension. The loading area boasts a fine-polished teakwood finish, with loading space varying from 140 cm (closed) to 200 cm (open). Thanks to the use of CFRP on roof components, rear doors and the rear lid, the Pickup truck weighs 200 kg less than the production model, despite a 10 cm longer body.

The handgrips and some of the trim strips are made from SLS 3D technology (Selective Laser Sintering), showcasing the competence and technical skills the trainees already possess. The exterior is finished in a BMW Individual colour Tanzanite Blue metallic – an exclusive navy blue finish, apparently inspired by yachting sports.

The X7 Pickup concept was created by 12 trainees in 10 months, and according to BMW, it is a fully functional, road-legal automobile. It is in fact, created off a test vehicle that returned from testing, which the trainees saved from being scrapped. Apparently, the trainees are dreaming to go for a spin in their creation after its premiere and even take it for a trip to the mountains.

At this point, the X7 Pickup remains a one-off concept. It’ll probably wait for enough interest from the end users to make it into a production vehicle.
