Aston Martin DBX gets a 4.0L V8 biturbo

Aston Martin DBX prototype

The Aston Martin DBX is in its final stages of development and as expected, the brand’s first-ever SUV has received a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, tuned to produce 550 metric hp and 700 Nm of torque. The V8 appears to have come from Affalterbach.

The testing includes everyday real-world driving and high-performance track evaluations, taking place at locations including the brand’s two key engineering centres at Silverstone, UK, and the Nürburgring.

While conducting durability testing at the Nürburgring race circuit, the DBX has delivered cornering speeds on par with the Vantage, while achieving braking figures greater than the DBS Superleggera, the company said. Apparently, the engineering team has managed to achieve sub 8-minute Nordschleife lap times regularly. Aston Martin expects the top speed to exceed 180 mph (290 km/h).

The “camouflage” the DBX has been wearing doesn’t really hide anything. Its curves and shapes can still be seen leaving little to the imagination. I guess it’s part of the plan. However, this prototype looks near-production with its production taillamps and bumpers.

Aston Martin said that the exhaust note has been tuned to reflect a deep bass with increasing mid-tones, “creating true auditory exhilaration”, particularly in more sporting drive modes.

We have concentrated our work to ensure that the calibration and tune of this 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 delivers both the everyday usability and refinement expected by SUV owners. However, we have also focused heavily on matching that with the engaging driving dynamics that are commanded by our brand and inherent in every Aston Martin and early indications of the car’s overall performance have been incredibly promising. – Matt Becker, Chief Engineer, Aston Martin
