When the Renault Kwid started to give them sleepless nights, India’s largest carmaker MSIL knew that they had to do something quick, to take back some of those sales. At the 2018 Auto Expo, the company showcased the Concept Future S with a similar design formula that made the Kwid a huge success story in the country.

When I say “similar design formula”, I simply mean SUV-ish or crossover-ish like design that people here love very much. The S-Presso we’re seeing here, is the production version of the aforementioned concept. In fact, Maruti Suzuki is categorizing the S-Presso under their SUV portfolio. While the concept looked pretty impressive, the same probably can’t be said for the production version. That said, the design might eventually grow on the people.

The designers seem to have drawn the inspiration from some Mahindra vehicles, especially when you look at the grille and the headlamps. The DRLs are positioned on the bumper, and the car doesn’t seem to get any alloy wheels. The example here is wearing wheel covers over black-painted steel wheels.

Other design features we can notice are blacked-out B-pillars, old school flap-style door pulls, and pretty much Baleno-like C-shaped taillamps. You can also notice the reflectors on the rear bumper. The wheel arches are pretty big and flared too with lots of space to mimic an SUV-like appearance.

The interiors will get body-colored accents on the dashboard, surrounding the air vents and the instrument housing. Speaking of which, the production version carries over the concept’s central positioning of the speedometer. Just like the Kwid, there seems to be no tachometer. Other features we can notice are the SmartPlay Studio infotainment system, steering-mounted buttons, and manual air conditioning. The front power window switches are positioned just under the infotainment screen.

The rear passengers get manual-winding windows. There are a couple of charging outlets at the front, and you can also notice two cup holders in the centre console. As for safety, expect two airbags and ABS with EBD.

The S-Presso is expected to be powered by a 1.0-litre (998 cc) 3-cylinder petrol engine that produces 50 kW (68 hp), and is expected to be offered with 5-speed manual transmission or an AMT.

As for dimensions, the S-Presso measures 3,565 mm in length, 1,520 mm in width and 1,564 mm in height (with 14-inch wheels). Wheelbase measures 2,380 mm.

Renault too is all set to introduce the Kwid facelift and it’ll be an interesting battle to see who wins again. Let me know what you guys think.
