The third-generation Volkswagen Touareg has now got a plug-in hybrid sibling. It is the brand’s top-of-the-range model and also the first R-Line model to be available as a hybrid.
As the pictures would suggest, the SUV gets all the sporty styling elements of the R-Line trim. These include the Black Style exterior package and 20-inch Braga alloy wheels.
Inside, the Touareg R gets Vienna leather upholstery with Crystal Grey stitching. Drivers can control the battery’s charge level via the Hybrid menu in the Infotainment system. It is therefore possible to reserve sufficient levels of energy even at the end of a long journey so that urban driving can be done in electric power alone.
Other features include Trailer Assist – an assistance system for automated manoeuvring with a trailer; and Travel Assist – enables assisted driving up to speeds of 250 km/h.
As for the business end, the hybrid powertrain is a combination of a 3.0-litre (2,995 cc) V6 turbocharged petrol engine, an electric motor and a 14.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that is built into the luggage compartment underbody. The ICE puts out 250 kW (340 hp) while the electric motor develops 100 kW (136 hp). The total system output is claimed to be 340 kW (462 hp) and 700 Nm torque.
An 8-speed automatic gearbox sends the output to all four wheels via the standard 4Motion all-wheel drive system. The Touareg R is claimed to reach speeds of up to 140 km/h in electric power alone.
