Lexus has updated its full-size sedan, the LS, with minor styling tweaks, new headlight technology, latest driver assistance systems, and improvements in terms of driving and cabin comfort.
As mentioned, the styling updates are minor and barely distinguishable. There’s a new exterior color called ‘Gin-ei Luster’ — a condensed paint containing aluminum flakes. The paint is applied using a new technology that eliminates any granular touch and delivers a smooth, mirror-like finish.
The updated LS features ‘BladeScan AHS’ (Adaptive High-beam System), where the LED light shines onto a blade mirror spinning at high speed and is transferred to a lens to illuminate the road ahead. While the light does not appear to be moving due to a residual image effect, the system precisely controls light distribution by synchronizing the rotation of the blade mirror and switching the LED headlights on and off. The system is claimed to illuminate areas that might be difficult to see with conventional high-beam systems.
The rear-end looks almost identical to the outgoing model. As always, the F Sport sports sportier overall looks and features tastefully applied dark styling elements in addition to subtle chrome application.
The updated interior features a new material called Nishijin & Haku (with “haku” being the Japanese word for “metal leaf”). Other features include a 12.3-inch central display, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto connectivity, and a digital rearview mirror.
The new LS also features ‘Lexus Teammate’ – the latest in advanced driver assistance technologies. The system monitors the driver’s status and assists the driver in making appropriate judgments according to the traffic conditions. On certain motorways, the system is capable of keeping the vehicle in its lane, maintaining vehicle-to-vehicle distance, changing lanes, and overtaking other vehicles. Part of the new assistance technology is the Advanced Park – parking assistance, where the system supports steering, acceleration, braking, and gear changes.
Other updates to the LS include new Adaptive Variable Suspension, new orifice inside the engine mounts to reduce vibrations transmitted into the vehicle’s cabin, seats with better vibration absorption capabilities, and better Active Noise Control.
The LS 500h hybrid (3.5L V6; 359 hp combined) gets increased electric torque assist during acceleration at regular driving speeds for a strain-free acceleration experience. In addition, the maximum engine rpm has been lowered for a quieter take-off. In the LS 500 (3.5L V6; 420 hp), the initial torque has been improved for better acceleration, and there’s also improved shift timing and a wider acceleration range for each gear, resulting in less-frequent downshifts.
