The JL Wrangler lineup has received a plug-in hybrid variant called Wrangler 4xe. It has been confirmed to go on sale in the United States, Europe and China by early 2021. Europe will also get Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe later this year, but that’s a different story.
As for the Wrangler 4xe, well, it gets the PHEV or EV-typical distinguishing styling elements such as Electric Blue accents, which I think are tastefully applied. Also, notice a classic Jeep icon on the 17-inch wheel rim. The wheels are shod with 33-inch off-road tires as standard on the Rubicon 4xe. The standard Wrangler 4xe and Wrangler Sahara 4xe models ride on 20-inch wheels.
The Rubicon 4xe boasts an approach angle of 44-degrees, breakover angle of 22.5-degrees, departure angle of 35.6-degrees and ground clearance of 10.8-inches. The water fording capability of up to 30-inches remains unchanged.
The Wrangler 4xe is available in 10 exterior colors: Black, Bright White, Firecracker Red, Granite Crystal Metallic, Hella Yella, Hydro Blue (late availability), Sting-Gray, Snazzberry, Sarge and Billet Silver Metallic.
Inside, the Wrangler 4xe gets Electric Blue contrast stitching on the seats, steering wheel, dashboard, door cards and on the gear lever. As for the upholstery, there are two options available: Black with Heritage Tan cloth and Black with Dark Saddle leather.
Moving on to the business end of the story, the Wrangler 4xe combines a 2.0-litre (1,995 cc) 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and an electric motor integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission. The ICE produces 272 metric hp (200 kW) at 5,250 rpm and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque at 3,000 rpm. The electric motor develops 136 metric hp (100 kW) and 245 Nm (181 lb-ft) of torque. A 17 kWh Li-NMC battery pack is mounted right underneath the rear seats, offering a claimed pure electric range of up to 50 km (31 mi). In case you’re wondering, the eSave mode as the name suggests, saves the battery charge for later use, in urban areas for example.
Wrangler Rubicon 4xe models carry the Rock-Trac 4×4 system that includes a two-speed transfer case with a 4:1 low-range gear ratio, full-time 4×4, front and rear next-generation Dana 44 axles, Tru-Lok electric front- and rear-axle lockers. More details here.
