If you ever wondered why there’s no electric version of a Boeing 747 yet, for example, well, it is because of the battery cell’s energy density, or the lack of it. Although today’s battery technology has come a long way from Alessandro Volta’s Voltaic pile, the energy is still not dense enough to power a large commercial aircraft. However, established companies and startups around the world are figuring out a way to cram more energy into a battery cell.

Porsche too is researching on this matter and one way according to the company is to use silicon anodes as opposed to commonly used graphite. Also, new electrolytes and additives allow operation even at temperatures above 75°C, the company said. These new batteries will initially be used in limited-production, high-performance vehicles and in customer motorsport.

Silicon enables a higher energy density and improves energy recovery as well as fast-charging capability. Porsche has already taken on a pioneering technological role in the development of 800-volt technology, first in the 919 Le Mans racing car and now in the Taycan electric sports car.

Porsche is also planning its own fast-charging stations along the important European major highways and motorways. Each station will have between 6 and 12 charging points with a charging capacity of 350 kW and more. Access will be controlled via smartphone, the company added.

An important prerequisite for electromobility is fast and convenient charging. That is why we are currently working on the details of a concept for our own fast-charging stations. We will select attractive locations for these in order to offer our customers the most comfortable and fastest long-distance travel experience possible. – Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board, Porsche
