Polestar 2 gets Digital Key via OTA update

Thanks to a new Over-the-Air (OTA) update, Polestar 2 owners can now use their smartphone (Polestar app) as a ‘Digital Key’ to lock/unlock their car, in addition to knowing the battery status and the ability to remotely start the climate control. Polestar said that more functions will be added at a later date.

“Being able to use your phone as a key makes sense especially in an age where our phones take care of most of our daily needs already, and it’s the one device you always carry with you,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO.

Of course, the app is available on both Android and iOS platforms. The Digital Key relies on Bluetooth technology and Polestar wants to assure that security has been the highest priority in developing the same. A total of 18 Bluetooth sensors in and around the car communicate with the paired device to ensure accuracy and secure authentication. While the doors, tailgate or charging port can be opened from outside, starting the car requires the paired smartphone to be inside the car.

Polestar added that the digital key is also immune to so-called relay attacks as it does not operate on radio frequency, and the encrypted Bluetooth signal is entirely reliant on the paired device being within the physical range of the sensors.
