Opel to go all-electric by 2028, to launch Manta-e by mid-decade

That’s right, the Opel Manta is making a comeback, but not as a two-door sports coupé electric restomod that we saw a couple of months ago. Opel has shared a teaser image which suggests that the brand is baking a mass-market electric SUV, for obvious reasons. This new electric SUV is expected by mid-decade. As part of the Stellantis EV Day 2021 announcements, Opel also said that it wants to go full bonkers on electrification by having an electric-only portfolio by 2028 in Europe.

“Purely-electric” doesn’t necessarily mean only BEVs, but will also include FCEVs. In addition, Opel wants to re-enter the Chinese market, for obvious reasons again. China is the world’s largest automotive market and Opel can’t say it doesn’t want a piece of that hot action.

We promised that Opel will go global – and we will deliver. China is the largest automotive market in the world and we are sure that we will grow profitably there. Chinese customers can look forward to our products and our emotional German brand. — Michael Lohscheller, CEO, Opel
