2022 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Squared shows off its portal axles

In 2018, Brabus built 10 more unofficial versions of the G-Class Squared (4×4²) that gave an opportunity for those very few who missed the original one. But don’t worry if you missed the Brabus too, coz it appears that the folks at Stuttgart are working on a second iteration based on the second-gen Geländewagen.

A baby blue-painted test mule was spotted in California recently, wearing minimal camouflage that covered only its wheel arches and logos. Another piece of camouflage covers the roof insert—just above the windshield—possibly concealing a lightbar. The key highlights of the G-Class Squared are those portal axles that take the regular G-Class’ capabilities to another level, literally. The previous-gen G-Class Squared boasted a ground clearance of 450 mm (17.7-inch) and a water fording depth of 1,000 mm (39.4-inch).

Looking at the pictures and the video, it appears that the new one too will at least offer similar capabilities, if not any better. And when combined with a 4.0L V8 biturbo motor, there’s not gonna be any such thing as “obstacles” in your dictionary.
