Aston Martin DBX S debuts with lightweight options & extra horses

For those who find the 550 hp DBX or even the 707 hp DBX707 “not-so-powerful” or “meh” (come on, really?!), Aston Martin has come up with a solution, and it’s called the DBX S. The ‘S’ suffix implies that this is the flagship model in the DBX lineup.

Visually, the DBX S wears a sportier body kit compared with the base DBX and the 707. There’s a generous application of exposed carbon fibre elements. The carbon fibre roof, however, is an optional extra. It is presented in a single weave pattern which, at almost 3 metres square, is by far the largest such carbon element ever fitted to an Aston Martin. This optional roof is claimed to save 18 kg (40 lbs) of mass. 23-inch Magnesium wheels can also be found in the options list; these wheels are claimed to save a further 19 kg (42 lbs) of unsprung mass. But don’t worry; the DBX S rolls off the assembly line with 23-inch forged aluminium wheels as standard. Specifying the aforementioned options will include the deletion of roof rails, offering further weight savings. Carbon fibre side sills and wing are also optional extras, saving a further 7 kg (15 lbs). A bespoke lightweight polycarbonate honeycomb grille, intricately designed with over 25,000 individual facets, can also be found in the options list.

The DBX S benefits from the full suite of suspension enhancements introduced last year, which saw a revised calibration of both the air springs and electronic dampers. This has resulted in improved ride quality and overall stability. Even at its limits, the standard electronic roll control ensures that the DBX S rolls by no more than 1.5 degrees; enough to create the natural feel of the car cornering but still keeping the car flatter than many purpose-built, two-seat sports cars, the company says. The spring rate also changes depending on the selected drive mode. Braking duties are handled by standard carbon ceramic rotors measuring 420 mm at the front and 390 mm at the back.

Moving on to the juicy bits of the story then, the powerplant continues to be supplied by the good folks at Affalterbach. In this application, the 4.0L V8 biturbo pumps out 535 kW (727 metric hp). While there are 20 more horses, the torque remains the same as 707, which is 900 Nm (664 lb-ft). The official 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint time also remains unchanged, which is 3.3 seconds. The top speed also remains unchanged at 310 km/h (193 mph). However, Aston Martin claims that the 0-200 km/h (124 mph) time has been cut by 0.3 seconds. In Sport and Sport+ modes, the gearbox is claimed to tuned for more aggressive downshifts.

Key features inside include Alcantara upholstery and a 14-speaker Aston Martin premium audio system as standard. A 23-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, specifically designed for DBX S, is an optional extra.
