At last year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este event, BMW showcased the Skytop concept—which apparently was a homage to the brand’s historical roadsters such as the Z8 and the 507. What’s interesting is that the Skytop will not remain a one-off concept; it’ll be offered as a limited edition model, thanks to great enthusiasm among connoisseurs and automotive enthusiasts. This year, on the shores of Lake Como, BMW showcased the Speedtop Concept, a shooting brake iteration of the Skytop. The Skytop and Speedtop are limited to 50 and 70 units, respectively. I’m not sure if those numbers are a reference to the 507.
Besides the obvious shooting brake body, the Speedtop sports a similar design language as the Skytop. The central spline looks even better in the Speedtop, as it runs from the bonnet over the roof and towards the rear spoiler. Also, notice the gradient on the roof, which transitions from Floating Sunstone Maroon to Floating Sundown Silver. The concept rides on two-tone, 14-spoke wheels.
Looks like the Speedtop offers plenty of space for two adults and their travel bags. In addition to that multi-level boot, there’s storage space behind the seats for a couple of bespoke Schedoni handbags. The rest of the car looks like any modern BMW; more specifically, the M8, upon which these concepts are likely based.
BMW says that the Speedtop is “fitted with the most powerful V8 engine currently offered by BMW”. In other words, the 4.4L V8 biturbo engine pumps out 460 kW (625 metric hp) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft). The engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and xDrive AWD system.
