Exactly, the oversized grille looked ugly in the electric GLC we saw not too long ago, but boy, does it look gangster in this Vision Iconic concept. So, what is Mercedes-Benz planning with this Vision Iconic concept? Well, there is one key feature which we’ll talk about in just a minute.
But first, can we appreciate the design? Because I think the design team led by Gorden Wagener has done a fantastic job with the Vision Iconic concept. The design is an inspiration from multiple models in the past, including W 108, W 111, 600 Pullman, and, of course, the legendary 300 SL. I think the retro-modern balance is just right. However, as mentioned, the Vision Iconic concept is not just about the design. Its body is covered in a photovoltaic paint with a thickness of 5 micrometers, which is claimed to harness additional range from the sun, depending on geographical location and local conditions. Interestingly, the solar coating is applied before the vehicle’s body color.
It’s a strange world on the inside; it’s a mix of Art Deco and retro-analogue elements. The 4-spoke steering wheel, for example, is reminiscent of that of a 19th-century boat, while the dashboard is a floating glass case called “Zeppelin”. At the centre of this case is a band containing four clocks, one of which is shaped like the brand logo—which apparently acts as an AI companion. As the door is opened, the analogue instrument cluster comes to life with its own animation inspired by high-end chronographs.
While we don’t have the horsepower and torque figures, we know that the concept is all-electric. The next iteration of this concept may have up to Level 4 automated driving system.
