Hyundai has launched the Kona Electric in India at an introductory ex-showroom price of Rs 25,30,000. With Kona, HMIL became the first carmaker to launch an all-electric SUV in the country.

While the word ‘Kona’ has different meanings in India, the name is derived from an island of Hawaii. The fully-electric version of Kona was globally revealed in February 2018. In the international markets, it is available in two variants – 39.2 kWh and 64 kWh; its the former that is being offered in the country.

The Kona’s electric motor produces 136 hp and 395 Nm of torque. The 39.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack is claimed to offer a range of 452 km (ARAI certification) on a single charge. DC charging takes about an hour to get to 80% of charge, which otherwise would take more than 6 hours, apparently.

The driver gets Eco, Eco+, Comfort, and Sport modes to play with. There are paddles too for adjustable regenerative braking.

The select dealers who’ll be selling the Kona EV will help the customers to install charging sockets at their premises; the support will be provided through Hyundai partner Allianz Worldwide. Allianz will do a pre-installation survey that will assess the residence type, power connection and upgradation requirement (if any), the procedure to upgrade the power supply, consumables required for installation, etc. Allianz will also provide dedicated telephonic support for the process.

Hyundai has partnered with IOCL to develop infrastructure at select fuel stations in select cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai). HMIL said that the company will invest in the equipment and installation of these Fast Chargers (CCS Type – Single Port). These chargers can charge 80% of the battery capacity in less than an hour.

As for warranty, Hyundai is offering 3 years and unlimited km, along with a warranty for 8 years and up to 160,000 km for the battery.
