After unveiling the S-Class facelift earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the rest of the members of the S-Class family – the Coupe and Cabriolet. We’ll take a look at the AMG variants in a separate post.

On the exterior, both the Coupe and Cabriolet get OLED taillights as standard. Wafer-thin layers of organic materials are printed on a glass plate and made to illuminate. There are a total of 66 ultra-flat OLEDs acting like floating elements inside the tail lamp. Of course, they come with different levels of intensity for brake lamps and turn signal indicators depending on the driving condition and ambient brightness.

Similar to its limousine sibling, interiors get two high-resolution displays, each with a screen diagonal of 12.3-inches. The digital cockpit offers three visually different styles “Classic”, “Sporty” and “Progressive”. Depending on personal preference or matching the selected interior, the styles can be quickly changed from the instrument cluster and the central display.

Both models have Touch Control buttons on the steering wheel. The operation of Distronic and cruise control directly with the steering wheel is another new feature. Other features include Linguatronic voice control, latest-generation Comand Online with 3D navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Energizing comfort control (optional), and driving assistance systems which include Active Distance Control Distronic and Active Steering Assist.

The optional Magic Body Control suspension with curve tilting function where the body tilts to the inside by up to 2.65 degrees reducing the transverse forces perceived by the passengers, continues to be offered. The technology recognizes bends with the help of a stereo camera behind the windscreen, and a lateral acceleration sensor of the Road Surface Scan suspension. Mercedes says that in the new S-Class Coupe, this suspension control is further improved. The system’s new stereo camera has a much better performance and works at speeds up to 180 km/h.

The Cabriolet is fitted with the Airmatic semi-active air suspension featuring variable damping control as standard.

Powertrains
The Coupe gets two powertrains. The S 450 4Matic comes with 3.0-litre (2,996 cc) V6 with an output of 367 hp and 500 Nm of torque. This variant does 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds. The S 560 4Matic on the other hand gets 4.0-litre (3982 cc) V8 with an output of 469 hp and 700 Nm of torque, propelling it from 0-100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds.

The Cabriolet too gets the same 4.0 V8 with the same output figures. However, there is no 4Matic on offer. Transmission is a 9G-Tronic automatic for all the models.

Mercedes said that the V8 petrol engines consume up to 8% less than its predecessor. To lower the fuel consumption, four cylinders of the V8 are deactivated simultaneously under partial load with the help of the Camtronic valve-lift adjustment system (Coupe only). This reduces the pumping losses while improving the overall efficiency of the remaining four cylinders by shifting the operating point towards higher loads.

There’s also a ‘gliding function’. The technology allows the engine to be decoupled from the powertrain and runs idle, so that the vehicle can coast freely.
