Hyundai’s new compact crossover Kona has been spotted completely undisguised in Portugal during what appears to be a commercial shoot, suggesting the official unveil is just around the corner.

The B-segment SUV sports the Hyundai signature ‘cascading grille’ and a twin headlamp set up at front. The LED DRLs are positioned on top of the LED headlights. The wheel arches get a thick plastic cladding and the roof has been blacked-out all the way to the spoiler, creating a two-tone theme and a floating roof effect.

Rear-end too seems to be having a twin tail lamp setup, the blinkers seems to be positioned just above the bumper. Hyundai says the Kona name continues Hyundai’s tradition of naming crossover and SUV models after acclaimed travel destinations, notably the Creta, Santa Fe, Tucson and Veracruz. As for the Kona, the name has been taken from the Kona district on the Big Island of Hawaii, “reflecting the island’s energetic image and unique lifestyle”.

While some reports claim Kona to be built on a modified i20 platform, some speculate it to be an i30 platform. Judging by its size, it appears to be the latter. The Kona might share the engines from the i20 or i30 as well. We’ll have to wait for Hyundai to confirm.

The Kona is not expected in the Indian market since the Creta is doing a good job here. Anyways, its always a good idea to wait for an official word isn’t it?
