Kia has revealed technical information on the 4th generation Sorento. For the first time ever, the SUV gets a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain.

Speaking of which, it comprises a 1.6-litre T-GDi (turbocharged) engine, a 44.2 kW (60 hp) electric motor and a 1.49 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The system output will be 230 hp and 350 Nm of torque. This will be for Korea, Europe and North American customers.

Korean and European customers can also get a new 2.2-litre 4-cylinder ‘Smartstream’ diesel engine, producing 202 hp and 440 Nm torque. This engine is paired with a new 8-speed wet dual-clutch transmission.

The new DCT claims to offer 58% improvement in maximum torque capacity, optimal clutch cooling, 3% improved fuel efficiency, and up to 9% improvement in 0-100 km/h acceleration.

For Korean and North American markets, a ‘Smartstream’ 2.5-litre T-GDi engine will also be offered. It puts out 281 hp and 421 Nm torque, paired with the aforementioned 8-speed DCT.

Kia said that a plug-in hybrid powertrain will join at a later date.
