After a brief teaser campaign, Nissan has finally taken the wraps off the 370Z successor at the Nissan Pavilion in Yokohama. It is called ‘Z Proto’ and as the name suggests, it is still a prototype.

Perhaps, the correct term would be a “concept”, as it kinda looks like a low-poly 3D model. The design is led by Alfonso Albaisa, Head of Design at Nissan. As for the design itself, the lineage is pretty clear; there’s no problem recognizing the Z Proto as the latest generation of the Z family. The shape of the headlights, especially the LED running lights, mimic the headlights of the 240ZG, for example. The taillights are a modern interpretation of those on the 300ZX.

The black roof looks tasteful and adds the necessary contrast. Also, notice the Fairlady Z badge on its rump. 19-inch alloy wheels and circular tailpipes round off the looks.

In the cockpit too, the designers have tried to maintain the Z lineage with those dashboard-mounted analogue meters (boost pressure, turbo rpm and volt), the shape of the door handles, air vents and even the centre console. However, there are modern touches in the form of a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display.

The most exciting part is of course, that it has got a 6-speed manual gearbox coupled with a V6 twin-turbo engine. More details are obviously, reserved for a later date. Meanwhile, enjoy some photos.

The Z, as a pure sports car, represents the spirit of Nissan. It’s a key model in our Nissan NEXT transformation plan, and it’s proof of our ability to do what others don’t dare to do, from A to Z. As a Z fan myself, I’m excited to announce that the next Z is coming. – Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida
