First Bentley EV will compose AI-based music matching driving style

Instrumental drama in real-time.

If you have driven any modern performance car, you might be aware of the fact that many carmakers have resorted to using “sound actuators” to pump in fake exhaust notes (a more PC terminology would be “simulated engine noise”) inside the cabin through the speakers, as a way to compensate for complying with noise regulations or in some cases, higher levels of noise insulation. But, what would you do when you take out the ICE altogether and replace it with an electric motor?

Well, if you have driven any powerful EV already, you know that an EV comes with that characteristic electric motor whine, which I believe is not bad at all. But Bentley thinks that it can make an EV sound more interesting, literally. The British luxury marque has teamed up with LifeScore Music to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based instrumental music that adapts to the driving conditions and the driver’s style — from relaxed grand touring to energetic, spirited driving on dynamic roads, for example. The algorithm considers variables such as engine RPM, acceleration and gear changes.

At Abbey Road Studios, the musicians are recording different types of music using more than 50 microphones, to essentially create a sound bank which the AI can use to compose tracks. Bentley explains with an example —

When playing music in a Cocoon mode, as the vehicle is winding through town, the music builds and evolves slowly, and when cruising speed is achieved, the music is sustained and deeply calming. When Enhanced driving mode is engaged, the music is highly reactive and more exciting, sensing transmission changes, acceleration and torque, resulting in a high-intensity audio experience where driving style and sound are inextricably linked.

Bentley said that this technology will be ready for the marque’s first Battery Electric Vehicle.
