Toyota Yaris hatchback becomes 2022 Mazda2 Hybrid in Europe

2022-Mazda2-Hybrid

As you probably might be aware, the Mazda2 was sold as the Toyota Yaris in North America between 2016 and 2020. Now Toyota is returning the favor by letting Mazda sell the 4th gen Yaris hatchback (not GR Yaris) as Mazda2 in European markets from spring 2022. The Yaris-rebadged Mazda2 will be available as a Hybrid and will be sold alongside Mazda’s own 2022 Mazda2. Besides the obvious, the other difference is that Mazda’s Mazda2 is a regular, non-hybrid model (a mild-hybrid depending on the market, but maybe we should say not a serious hybrid?), while the Yaris-rebadged Mazda2 will be referred to as Mazda2 Hybrid. So there’s not gonna be any awkward conversations with the dealership such as “are you talkin about Mazda’s Mazda2 or ‘that’ Mazda2?”.

But anyway, the Mazda2 Hybrid looks just like the Yaris, obviously, since it is a literal rebadge. Notice how the Mazda logo perfectly matches the car’s swoopy lines and curves. Depending on the trim, the wheels measure 15- or 16-inches.

It’s the same story inside; except for Mazda logos, the car is identical to the Yaris. Which means all the features will be carried over as well, including the Toyota Safety Sense suite of safety and ADAS. The 2022 Mazda2 Hybrid will be available in three trims in Europe: Mazda2 Hybrid Pure, Mazda2 Hybrid Agile and Mazda2 Hybrid Select.

As for the juicy bits of the story, the hybrid powertrain combines a 68 kW (93 metric hp) 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine with a 59 kW (80 metric hp) electric motor for a total system output of 85 kW (116 metric hp). Transmission appears to be a CVT.
