Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-Door makes Auto Expo debut

Will this affect the Thar prices?

It has been a ridiculously long wait, but the 4th gen Suzuki Jimny is finally in the Indian market. I mean, it’s not here just for the Auto Expo but will actually be sold at a NEXA outlet near you. Pricing info is yet to be shared, but in the meantime, let’s take a look at the product itself.

While everywhere else in the world people are driving the 3-door Jimny, MSIL is introducing a more practical 5-door version in the country, which I think should be greatly appreciated. If I’m not wrong, the development of the 5-door version began in early 2021, but I think the test mules were disguised as long-wheelbase versions. But anyway, the 5-door Jimny measures 3,985 mm long (including the spare wheel), 1,645 mm wide and 1,720 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,590 mm. The ground clearance is 210 mm.

The above infographic shows how the long wheelbase has affected the 5-door Jimny’s approach, break-over and departure angles.

For the Indian market, the Jimny 5-door will be offered only in Zeta and Alpha trims. The Alpha trim rides on 15-inch alloy wheels wrapped with rather skinny 195/80 tyres. Automatic LED headlights and front fog lights are also exclusive to the Alpha trim.

Key features on the inside depending on the trim include a 9-inch SmartPlay Pro+ touchscreen (7-inch for Zeta); wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay connectivity; auto AC; cruise control; adjustable headrests; all four power windows, and more. Standard safety kit includes airbags (front, side and curtain), ABS + EBD, ESP, a rearview camera, hill-hold control, hill descent control, and a few more. Both trims also get Brake Limited Slip Differential as standard. Download the brochure here.

Moving on to the juicy bits of the story, the Jimny 5-door in India is powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that offers 77 kW (105 metric hp) and 134 Nm (99 lb-ft) of torque. Compare these figures with mStallion 150 engine’s (Thar petrol) 112 kW (152 metric hp) and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft). But anyway, the 1.5L engine can be coupled with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox. AllGrip Pro 4WD system (with low-range transfer) comes standard.
